Every year, usually around Easter, I start hearing the same thing from students.

“I don’t think I’m ready.”

Sometimes it’s coming from a student who genuinely has a lot of work to do.

But quite often it’s coming from somebody who has been doing reasonably well all year.

That’s one of the strange things about A Level Maths. The closer the exams get, the more students start noticing the topics they don’t know rather than the ones they do.

A student who could comfortably solve a differentiation question in February suddenly starts worrying about integration. Someone who was happy with statistics becomes convinced they’ve forgotten everything.

Parents see it too. The confidence drops. The stress levels rise. Revision becomes more intense.

He talked about it constantly.

If you’d listened to him for ten minutes, you’d have assumed every mistake he made came from calculus.

Then we looked through a collection of past papers.

The reality?

His calculus was mostly fine.

The bigger issue was algebra.

Tiny algebra mistakes were appearing everywhere. They were showing up in differentiation, integration, coordinate geometry and even mechanics.

Once we fixed the algebra, everything else improved.

Simple mistakes start creeping in.

Working becomes less organised.

The maths wasn’t the issue.

The situation was.

Students spend so much time working alone.

Sometimes it’s useful to sit in a room with other people facing exactly the same challenges.

A student asks a question.

Half the room nods.

Another student explains their method.

Somebody else shares a shortcut they’ve discovered.

Those little moments can be surprisingly powerful.

Students realise they’re not the only one struggling with a topic.

They realise everybody has strengths and weaknesses.

And quite often they pick up useful ideas from one another.

What Usually Happens After a Revision Course?

The students who gain the most are not necessarily the strongest mathematicians.

They’re usually the students who leave with a plan.

They know which topics need attention.

They know which mistakes keep appearing.

They know what they’re going to focus on next.

That’s important because a revision course is never the finish line.

It’s part of the process.

The real improvement happens afterwards when students go away and apply what they’ve learned.
