We start with what’s called the null hypothesis — the “nothing’s changed” position. Then we gather data, run some tests, and ask whether what we see is unusual enough to doubt that assumption. Once you start spotting it, hypothesis testing is everywhere. In science labs, it’s used to check whether a treatment actually works. In business, it decides whether a new advert boosts sales. Sports analysts use it to see if training changes performance. Even education research — like whether shorter lessons improve focus — relies on it.

I sometimes tell my students, “If you see anyone claiming something ‘works,’ there’s probably a hypothesis test hiding in the background.” It’s oddly satisfying to realise how much of the world quietly runs on that simple bell curve you drew in Year 12.

The mindset it builds

Here’s what I love about teaching this topic — it changes how students think, not just how they calculate. It trains you to pause before jumping to conclusions. To ask, “Is this real, or could it be random?” That tiny question turns out to be powerful in life beyond maths too.

I once had a student email me from university saying, “Sir, that normal distribution’s everywhere — and now I can’t unsee it!” That made me smile. Because it’s true. Once you understand it, it changes how you see data — and the world starts to look less confusing and more… measurable.

Confidence intervals — the other side of the coin

If hypothesis testing is about deciding whether to reject an idea, confidence intervals are about estimating where the truth probably lies. Both rely on the same normal distribution — they’re just different ways of expressing uncertainty.
