What is a catalyst?

A catalyst is a substance that accelerates the rate of a chemical reaction without undergoing any permanent change itself. It plays a crucial role in various chemical processes by lowering the activation energy required for the reaction to occur. This allows the reactants to convert into products more efficiently and at a faster pace, making catalysts essential in both industrial applications and biological systems. For instance, in the context of enzyme catalysis, biological catalysts facilitate metabolic reactions that are vital for life.

The mechanism by which a catalyst operates involves the formation of an intermediate complex with the reactants, which subsequently leads to the formation of products. This interaction alters the pathway of the reaction, enabling it to proceed through a lower energy transition state. As a result, the presence of a catalyst can significantly enhance the reaction rate, allowing processes that would otherwise be too slow to occur under normal conditions. Catalysts are widely utilised in various fields, including chemical manufacturing, environmental science, and pharmaceuticals, where they contribute to the efficiency and sustainability of chemical processes.

It is important to note that while catalysts facilitate reactions, they do not alter the equilibrium position of the reaction. This means that while they can speed up the rate at which equilibrium is reached, they do not change the overall yield of the products. Additionally, catalysts can be classified into two main categories: homogeneous catalysts, which exist in the same phase as the reactants, and heterogeneous catalysts, which are in a different phase.
