What are the differences between covalent and ionic bonding?
Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electrons between atoms, resulting in the formation of a strong bond. In this type of bonding, atoms share electrons in order to achieve a stable electron configuration. This sharing of electrons allows each atom to fill its outer electron shell and become more stable. Covalent bonds are typically formed between nonmetal atoms.
On the other hand, ionic bonding involves the transfer of electrons from one atom to another, resulting in the formation of ions. In this type of bonding, one atom loses electrons to become a positively charged ion (cation), while another atom gains those electrons to become a negatively charged ion (anion). The attraction between these oppositely charged ions creates a strong ionic bond.
One key difference between covalent and ionic bonding is the nature of the bond itself. Covalent bonds are characterised by the sharing of electrons, while ionic bonds are characterised by the transfer of electrons. Additionally, covalent bonds tend to be stronger than ionic bonds, as the sharing of electrons creates a more stable bond. Furthermore, covalent bonds are typically formed between nonmetal atoms, while ionic bonds are typically formed between metal and non-metal atoms.
