How Do I Deal With Exam Anxiety?

Written by S. Mahandru, Maths Subject Lead, Exam.tips

You know that flutter you get before an exam? Yeah — that’s normal. Almost every student I’ve ever taught has felt it, even the really confident ones. The aim isn’t to eliminate exam anxiety; it’s to stop it bossing you around.

In my lessons I often say, “Preparation quiets panic.” When you’ve practised questions and seen the patterns, your brain starts whispering, “Hang on, I know this.” That’s confidence creeping in. Before the paper starts, breathe slowly — in, out, twice more — and tell yourself, I’ve done this before. Sounds simple, right? But it really works.

And if your mind suddenly goes blank mid-question, don’t fight it. Look away for a moment, roll your shoulders, maybe smile (honestly, it helps). Then reread the question like it’s brand new. Usually, the answer wanders back once you’ve stopped chasing it.
