How are B cells activated?

The activation of B cells is a critical process in the adaptive immune response, primarily initiated when these cells encounter specific antigens. B cells possess unique receptors known as B cell receptors (BCRs) that are tailored to recognize particular antigens. Upon binding to their corresponding antigen, B cells undergo a series of intracellular signalling events that lead to their activation. This initial encounter can occur in various contexts, such as during an infection or vaccination, where the presence of pathogens or their components stimulates the immune system.

Following the binding of an antigen to the BCR, B cells often require additional signals for full activation. These signals typically come from helper T cells, which provide necessary co-stimulatory signals through interactions with surface molecules on the B cells. The helper T cells release cytokines that further promote B cell proliferation and differentiation. This collaboration between B cells and T cells is essential for generating a robust immune response, as it ensures that B cells not only recognize the antigen but also receive the support needed to mount an effective response.

Once activated, B cells can differentiate into plasma cells, which are responsible for producing large quantities of antibodies specific to the encountered antigen. These antibodies play a crucial role in neutralising pathogens and marking them for destruction by other immune cells. Additionally, some B cells become memory B cells, which persist long after the initial infection has been cleared. This memory allows the immune system to respond more rapidly and effectively upon subsequent exposures to the same antigen, highlighting the importance of B cell activation in establishing long-term immunity.
