Explain the chain rule of differentiation

The outer function is the one that is applied last, while the inner function is applied first. By differentiating the outer function with respect to the inner function and then multiplying it by the derivative of the inner function with respect to the variable of interest, one can obtain the derivative of the composite function. This technique is particularly useful in various fields such as physics, engineering, and economics, where complex relationships between variables often necessitate the differentiation of composite functions.

In practical applications, the chain rule simplifies the process of differentiation, especially when dealing with functions that involve multiple layers of composition. For instance, if one were to differentiate a function like \( y = \sin(x^2) \), the chain rule would allow for the differentiation of the sine function as the outer function and \( x^2 \) as the inner function. By applying the chain rule, one would find that the derivative is \( \cos(x^2) \cdot 2x \). This illustrates how the chain rule not only streamlines the differentiation process but also enhances our understanding of how changes in one variable can affect another through composite relationships.
