Creating a Stem and Leaf Diagram: A Visual Guide

Stem and leaf diagrams are a fantastic way to quickly organize and visualize data. Let’s walk through how to create one using the heights of 15 plants (in centimeters):

15, 20, 25, 33, 17, 22, 25, 18, 22, 19, 32, 35, 24, 28, 19

1. Identify the Stems and Leaves

  • Stems: The “stems” are the leading digit(s). In this case, since our data ranges from 15 to 35, our stems will be 1, 2, and 3.
  • Leaves: The “leaves” are the final digit of each number.

2. Create the Basic Diagram

Draw a vertical line. To the left of the line, write the stems in ascending order.

1 |
2 |
3 |

3. Add the Leaves

Now, go through the data and add each “leaf” to the corresponding stem. For example, 15 has a stem of 1 and a leaf of 5. 20 has a stem of 2 and a leaf of 0.

1 | 5 7 8 9 9
2 | 0 2 2 4 5 5 8
3 | 2 3 5

4. Order the Leaves (Important!)

It’s crucial to order the leaves in ascending order. This makes it easier to read and analyze the data.

1 | 5 7 8 9 9
2 | 0 2 2 4 5 5 8
3 | 2 3 5

5. Add a Key

A key explains what the diagram represents. For example:

Key: 1 | 5 = 15 cm

Final Stem and Leaf Diagram:

1 | 5 7 8 9 9
2 | 0 2 2 4 5 5 8
3 | 2 3 5
Key: 1 | 5 = 15 cm

What Does This Tell Us?

The stem and leaf diagram shows us the distribution of plant heights. We can quickly see that most of the plants are in the 20-29 cm range.
