Maths can be a challenging subject and the more the practise the easier it gets to grasp the subject as a whole.

Beyond the immediate curriculum, these courses open the doors to a vast library of essential learning resources, ensuring that students have every tool at their disposal for comprehensive revision.

The Structure of A Level Maths Exams

As a parent supporting your child through their A Level Maths journey, it’s essential to recognise that not all exam boards adhere to the same standards or structures. Ensuring your child is well-acquainted with the specific format and requirements of their chosen exam board can be instrumental in their academic success. The leading exam boards in the A Level Maths curriculum are AQA, Edexcel, and OCR MEI. We highly recommend familiarising yourself and guiding your child to do the same with the particular challenges of their board. Proper research and tailored preparation can make a significant difference in their performance and understanding.

AQA Exam Breakdown

The AQA A Level Maths exam is divided into three distinct parts: Pure Mathematics 1, Pure Mathematics 2, and Statistics and Mechanics.

Pure Mathematics 1: This paper focuses on evaluating your proficiency in subjects like algebra, geometry, and calculus. The questions will range from multiple-choice to structured formats, with a total of 100 marks available.

Pure Mathematics 2: Building on the content of the first paper, this segment tests your capability to employ mathematical concepts in more intricate scenarios. It maintains the same format as the previous paper, with another 100 marks on offer.

Statistics and Mechanics: This section concentrates on the application of mathematical principles to real-world situations, specifically within the fields of statistics and mechanics. As with the other papers, 100 marks can be scored here.

For those aiming for high scores, a deep understanding of each segment and thorough preparation is key.

Edexcel

This isn’t just your everyday exam; it’s a thorough check-up of how well students know and can use those maths concepts. Just like its cousin, the AQA A Level Maths exam, the Edexcel one is split into three parts, each lasting two hours and carrying the same weightage. The first two are all about Pure Mathematics, and the third one dives into Statistics and Mechanics. Edexcel is also divided in three parts namely:

Pure Mathematics 1: Consider this paper as a sum up of the foundational concepts of mathematics, delving deep into algebra, geometry, and calculus. The primary objective is to gauge students’ comprehension of these ideas and their aptitude for applying them in diverse contexts.

Pure Mathematics 2: This segment builds upon the foundation set by the first paper. Incorporating the principles from Pure Mathematics 1, it delves deeper, challenging students with more intricate and complex mathematical scenarios.

Statistics and Mechanics: Envision this as the culminating challenge. This paper demands students to apply their mathematical prowess in practical settings, especially within the realms of statistics and mechanics. It’s the test of how well one can use mathematical theory to navigate real-world situations.

OCR MEI

Let’s have a look into the OCR MEI A Level Maths exam! It’s also a challenging one with three parts, each of them 2.5 hours long: Pure Mathematics 1, Pure Mathematics 2, and Comprehension.

Pure Mathematics 1: This part tests your skills in algebra, geometry, and calculus. There are multiple-choice and structured questions, and you can score up to 75 marks.

Pure Mathematics 2: A level up from the first part, this one tests if you can apply those concepts in trickier situations. Same format, 75 marks up for grabs.

Comprehension: This is a fun one! It tests if you can read, interpret, and analyse mathematical info using materials like graphs, charts, or tables. There are 50 marks available here.

Unlocking Success in A Level Maths: Small Classes, Big Results

So, when you sign your child up for A Level Maths Easter Revision Course, you’re actually giving them a great advantage because the classes are usually quite small. This means they get to have more one-on-one time with their tutor, which is fantastic for personalised attention and making the most of their studies.

Now, as a concerned parent considering this, it’s also an opportunity for you to take charge of your child’s learning and really encourage them to strive for success. It’s important for all students to be focused, attentive, and proactive. Every single minute is valuable, so they have to make sure to participate in all the activities and exercises to the best of their abilities. That way, they’re on the right track to achieving their academic goals.

One of the big ones that contribute to this is that they’re not supposed to use their phones during lessons unless the teacher says it’s okay. It’s just too easy to get sidetracked and make it harder for everyone to focus.
