Let's Talk Exam Success
Our A Level Maths Easter Half Term Revision Course provides Year 13 students with a crucial opportunity to consolidate their learning ahead of final exams. With teaching content completed in schools and colleges, Easter is the ideal time to focus fully on exam preparation. This intensive three-day course covers pure maths, mechanics and statistics, allowing students to strengthen weaker areas and refine exam technique. We focus on the strategies and question approaches needed for success in the summer examinations.
This course follows the structure of our A Level Maths Revision Course, covering pure maths, mechanics and statistics with focused exam preparation.
What Is Covered in the Easter Half Term Course?
Students choose the key topics to cover. We align this teaching with the requirements of the main exam boards. This ensures students strengthen their understanding of key topics. This allows students to become prepared.
Some of the topics that we may cover:
Differentiation Strategies
Differentiation is an important part of calculus, but for many students, choosing the right method can be a barrier to success. If students need to differentiate a product of two functions, they should use the product rule; if students need to differentiate a function expressed as a quotient, they will need to apply the quotient rule. If students are dealing with a composite function they will use the chain rule and if they are differentiating implicitly they will be using implicit differentiation.
The most difficult part for students is to know the category of the problem so they apply the correct method. To help the students master this skill, they need to be able to annotate expressions they are differentiating very clearly, they need to work on their recognition of the patterns and be exposed to many different examples to strengthen their decisions and build their confidence.
Integration Strategies
Choosing an integration strategy is like trying to figure out how to take the best path through the woods with no map. Students can become apprehensive about their choices of substitution, integration by parts, partial fractions or trig identities. While all these are suitable, students eventually do not choose one method, and they generally find a more complicated way to arrive at a solution.
Sometimes will give you a specific instruction as to whether to use substitution or by parts. But when it doesn’t then is when difficulties can arise. A typical mistake made with substitution is not changing the limits so they are also in terms of “u”.
By following the strategies that are discussed in the course, integration will become a topic that is better understood.
Parametrics
For some students, working with parametric equations is like venturing into unchartered waters. Rather than having y depend on x, both coordinates depend upon a third variable, usually t, which is often quite foreign.
Converting a parametric equation to a cartesian equation is not always straightforward as there can be some complicated algebra as well as the need to recall various trig identities.
As well as this, there is also the need to be able to apply differentiation to parametric equations. This mainly makes use of the Chain Rule but there are some exam boards, such as Edexcel, where integration of parametric equations is also needed.
