Securing an A level in physics can open up a lot of opportunities for you. As arguably one of the most difficult subjects out there, physics is very well-respected and recognised by organisations and employers across the country. Whilst you may not know what careers can follow this qualification, read one to find more information!

Academic researcher

Academic researchers in physics are greatly respected and are an asset to their field. Whilst you’ll need a higher degree to secure this career, an online A level physics tutor is a really good starting point. You’ll use the skills you’ve gained from your physics qualification to study, research, and even publish your own papers.

Being an academic researcher could involve teaching undergraduate students as well as speaking at conferences about your founded work. A level physics can prepare you for this by giving you scientific knowledge which may inspire you to specialise in a particular branch of physics. It may also give you problem-solving and lab skills to carry out your research.

If you’re interested in teaching students younger than those at university level, you could consider becoming a high school physics teacher to share your knowledge with the growing minds of the future. Note that academic researchers usually get paid more than teachers though, so you’ll want to weigh up your options before jumping to a decision.

Astronomer

Interested in exploring the stars, planets, and galaxies that our incredible universe has to offer? This is a narrow branch in physics. However, it’s popular due to how interesting making discoveries is. You could find yourself pushing the boundaries of human knowledge by using telescopes and computer modules to discover and explain observations.

As an astronomer, you’d be employed by universities or research institutes. Regular roles could include collecting and analysing data, writing scientific articles, and presenting your work at conferences. If you have a passion for the world outside our own, physics A level could be the first step to take you on this journey.

Geophysicist

Geophysicists study the physical processes of the earth. Whilst you’ll study a broad range of modules in A level physics, you may find yourself being drawn to some rather than others.

This could cause you to specialise in a specific branch. Geophysics could be that branch! You could find yourself studying the physical aspects of our earth using a broad range of methods. If you’re good at plotting and interpreting data, this career type might just be for you. You might have to use computers for data management, write documentation, and adapt to the newest developing technologies. Physics A level can be the steppingstone for helping you get to this point by giving you the foundation of scientific skills.

So, you can probably see that there are a wide variety of career paths that students studying A level physics can take. The possibilities are broad since there’re so many different specialities to zoom in on. You won’t be restricted with picking a career if you study A level physics!
