So, what grades at GCSE do you need to get to do physics A level? Physics A level is one of the most challenging A levels out there – there’s just no avoiding this fact. That’s why you should take careful consideration in whether to pick this subject at A level or not. Looking at your GCSE results can be a great place to start.

So, what do you really need to get?

For most colleges, you need a B (6) or above at GCSE to carry a subject on at A level. So, in reality, if you get below a B (6), you will not be able to carry on with further study in physics. However, many recommend that students should get an A (7) or above at GCSE to have any chance of getting a good grade in A level.

You must consider that A level is a huge step up from GCSE. Even students who find GCSEs rather easier can get stumped at A level due to the sheer complexity of it. A level does stand for ‘Advanced’ for a reason! Even the most intelligent students can struggle at times with A level physics.

The mathematics, theories, and concepts are a whole lot harder at A level. Therefore, you need to consider your GCSE grade and how you think you’d deal with harder exams. As well as looking at your physics GCSE grade, it might also be worth looking at your maths grade since A level physics involves a lot of maths.

If you already have a university or employer in mind, you might know what A level grades you need to get. This can definitely put things into perspective and help you make your A level choices. You just need to be realistic! If you struggled at GCSE, you’re most likely going to be put in a vulnerable position at A level.

How to make your decision easier

After looking at your GCSE grades and you’re still not sure of whether to pick physics or not, there are a few other things you can do to help you make your decision. You can easily ask your teacher for advice.

They’re getting paid for a reason and they should be there to help you on your journey. A teacher may have a better idea than you on whether you’re capable of doing this A level. This is because physics teachers will have gone through physics A level revision themselves and will know this subject inside out. Looking at your mock exam results can also give you a better idea if you’ve not quite completed your GCSEs yet.
