Is GCSE Geography Hard?

You may be a student wondering what options to pick for GCSE or just generally curious about this subject. So, is GCSE geography hard? This is definitely an opinion, but we can easily add weight to it with a bit of discussion…

Every student is different

As with all students with all subjects, abilities and weaknesses will vary. Some students may find it incredibly easy if it’s something they excel at and can get their head around, whilst other students may feel quite challenged – it all depends on the individual.

It depends on how much work you’re willing to put in (with hard-working, motivated-to-revise students generally always getting a better result than students who neglect their studies), and how much you understand the concepts.

If you’re struggling, you can easily ask your online geography tutor or for help to tackle any problem you may have – if you’re willing to bring your issues to light, you’re more likely to find the subject easy by combatting these issues.

Students have strengths and weaknesses across the different subjects – with students studying around ten different GCSEs, students are most likely going to shine in some subjects whilst lagging in others, with people’s brains working in different ways.

Everyone has different skills, so whether your geography skills are up to scratch or not could determine whether this subject is hard for you. Generally, geography skills include graphical, cartographical, and statistical skills just to name a few.

Looking at the bigger picture

When you consider looking at the bigger picture of all subjects and all levels of qualifications, most would be inclined to say that GCSE geography is not difficult in the grand scheme of things.

For example, there is less pressure to get a good grade in this than the core subjects of English and maths, meaning that a student may be inclined to perform better in geography.

Furthermore, GCSEs on the whole are relatively easy when compared to A levels, in which many students get a big shock from the huge, academic step up from GCSE when they go to college.

There is less application at GCSE, meaning it’s arguably easier to pick up those all-important marks, and a lot of it is just based on memorising the textbook.

Having coursework in GCSE geography can help a lot of students with their overall grade since this is a chance to perfect a piece of work without the pressure of examination conditions.

If you must choose between the humanities subjects, history is definitely a lot more essay-based with an arguably larger workload – so, in the bigger picture, GCSE geography might not be so hard after all.

Overall, it’s down to opinion and personal experience of whether GCSE geography is ‘hard’ or not. There’s certainly a lot more challenging routes to go down, and A levels are certainly much harder than GCSEs could ever be.

This is not to say that you won’t struggle at GCSE geography – if you find the skills hard and find learning concepts difficult, you might have to put extra work in to secure the grade you want.
